What is Manual Physical Therapy?

 Manual therapies involve hands-on techniques used by therapists to treat pain and dysfunction in the body. They are designed to relieve tension, improve flexibility, and enhance overall movement.

Manual physical therapy isn’t just about movement — it’s about how your body heals and thrives

Manual physical therapy is a hands-on, whole-body approach that looks beyond symptoms to uncover the true source of discomfort or dysfunction. Rather than focusing only on strength or flexibility, manual therapy begins with a simple but powerful question: why is this happening?


Every session starts with one-on-one care, a detailed history, and a deep understanding of your unique story — sometimes reaching all the way back to childhood. Injuries, surgeries, stress, posture, even emotional or nutritional factors can leave lasting imprints on the body. These often show up as somatic dysfunctions—subtle restrictions that may prevent traditional treatments like exercise from being fully effective.


Heather’s approach is to treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis. She evaluates the entire body to identify which systems need support — including the musculoskeletal, visceral (organ-related), lymphatic, and autonomic nervous systems — because true healing happens when all these parts work together in balance.


Using gentle yet powerful manual techniques, Heather works with the body’s natural rhythms to release restrictions. This method can be applied across systems — from cranial and respiratory to digestive, urinary, and reproductive — allowing for improved circulation, fluid drainage, and nervous system regulation.


Just like you wouldn’t play a round of golf with only one club, Heather doesn’t rely on a one-size-fits-all method. Instead, she draws from a range of tools and techniques to ensure your treatment is effective, supportive, and long-lasting.

Autonomic Nervous System Balancing

The ANS controls vital functions like heart rate, breathing, and digestion. Balancing these systems involves various therapeutic approaches including breathing techniques, gentle movement, and hands-on therapies. This gentle approach often results in improved sleep, better stress management, enhanced digestion, and overall greater well-being. It can benefit anyone experiencing stress-related symptoms or seeking to optimize their body's natural regulatory functions.


Chapman's Neurolymphatic Reflexes

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in immune function and maintaining fluid balance. Chapman's Neurolymphatic Reflexes are small, palpable points in the fascia that become tender when there is organ dysfunction or disrupted lymphatic flow. Gentle pressure & massage techniques on these points helps restore proper lymphatic drainage & support the body's natural healing processes. This therapy can be beneficial for addressing organ-related issues and supporting overall immune function.


Craniosacral Therapy (CST)

The craniosacral system extends from the skull down to the sacrum (lower back), acting as a hydraulic system to help the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which plays a vital role in stabilizing and nourishing the brain and spinal cord. Craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on technique where the therapist lightly touches the skull, spine, and pelvis to help release tension and promote relaxation and well-being. This therapy is soft and calming, making it great for people of all ages.


The Feldenkrais Method®

The Feldenkrais Method is a gentle somatic education approach that uses slow, mindful movements and directed attention to help retrain the brain and improve movement quality. This method helps people discover more efficient ways to move, reducing pain and enhancing overall function. The approach is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, focusing on learning rather than forcing change.


Listening

Listening is a hands-on technique that allows practitioners to intuitively feel and be guided to areas of the body needing treatment. This method prioritizes the body's own signals over traditional symptom-based diagnostics, ensuring a more responsive and personalized care approach. Emphasizing gentle contact, it is a core principle of osteopathic treatment, enhancing the practitioner's ability to respond to the body's true needs.


Muscle Energy Technique (MET)

When muscles become tight or imbalanced, they can restrict normal joint movement and cause pain. MET is a gentle therapy where the patient actively participates by performing controlled muscle contractions against the therapist's precise resistance. This helps relax tight muscles, improve joint mobility, and restore normal movement patterns without force or discomfort. MET is particularly effective for treating joint stiffness and muscle tension while being comfortable and safe for most people.


Myofascial Release (MFR)

Myofascial connective tissues are a network of thin but strong connective tissues that wrap around and support muscles throughout the entire body. Myofascial release is a manual therapy that alleviates pain by applying sustained, gentle pressure to these myofascial connective tissues. This helps release muscle tension and improve mobility without causing discomfort. It's a soothing process that helps improve overall comfort, so it's suitable for anyone experiencing chronic pain or tension.
